A brother and sister died trying to save their friend from drowning in a pond in Kandal’s Muk Kampoul district yesterday afternoon.
The youngest child, a seven-year-old girl, was playing in the water and got into trouble. The brother and sister, aged ten and 12, then attempted to save her, but all three ended up drowning.
The incident took place at lunchtime, but it took hours to recover the bodies, Prey Dambang commune police chief Ley Dara said.
“The grandma of the brother and sister said they went missing from home at around 12pm,” he said.
“We started searching for them at 1pm, found their bikes and clothes near the water at 2pm and finally recovered the bodies at 4pm.”
In a separate case in Battambang province, a man drowned on Sunday night when he was washing in Steung Sangke lake.
Police said the man had been drunk and was found floating in the lake yesterday morning. He is yet to be identified.
